Spider Mites

July 8th, 2010 by Sarah

A few days ago, I was sorting out the cardboard rubbish in the barn, ready to take for recycling and as I was dismantling a box, to lay flat I noticed this spider on one of the flaps.

Not only can I not seem to identify what kind of spider it is, nor can I determine what the reddish orange blobs are on it’s legs and head … I am assuming a sort of spider mite. If anyone has any idea, please let me know what it was.

  • Hi Sarah the blobs are parasitic mites as you suspect and they are frequently seen on harvestman spiders. I’ve no idea what species of spider this is but the length of the legs suggest it is one of the harvestman group - sorry.

  • Had another look Sarah and it’s not a harvestman but possibly may be a nurseryweb; was it guarding a ball of eggs or anything like that?

  • Not that I could see … it was just on the inside flap of a cardboard box … the spider was about 2 and half inches in length, toe to toe :o) Also, the legs were really really thin - looking at pictures on the web of nursery web spiders, they seem to be thick set…
